Mary Defayette, a breast cancer survivor from Eagle, Idaho, told Consumers Union that despite her need for follow-up treatment and costly prescriptions – and the haunting fear of a relapse – the $8,500 annual cost of her health insurance finally forced her to drop her coverage. For the first time in her life, she is uninsured.
This week, Mary told her story to the press, and members of Congress, too.
Dozens of health reform activists from throughout the nation joined Mary this week in Washington to walk the halls of Congress, meeting with their Senators and Representatives to talk about their experiences with the health care system. Their request: Give us real, meaningful health care reform that will lower our costs and get everyone covered.
Consumers Union hosted the lobby day in collaboration with the American Cancer Society, American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) and Service Employees International Union (SEIU). Each group invited people who shared their health-care story with their lawmaker, and asked point-blank: What is Congress doing to fix the health care system?
Legislators pointed to the current momentum in Washington for change and predict health care reform bills will be debated over the next several months. When they do, health care activists like Mary will be on hand to make sure elected officials know that Americans expect real action and real reform.
Those of you all "dying" (as you will soon be if it passes) for Rationed Government Healthcare or I think you like to delude yourselves and call it single payor system...get some answers from your Congressional Representatives before. Here are the 2 simple questions to get answers to:
1) Will the members of Congress and White House Officials and their families be on the EXACT and I do stress exact same RATIONED no choice one size fits all healthcare plan as the rest of the US. Get a simple yes or no answer to that. Accept nothing less. I know that the answer is no but ask anyway. And then perhaps ask yourself why they don't want to be on the plan/get the type of care the rest of us will get..hummmm....2 Will you get to choose your own doctor and will that doctor have the FINAL say on what medicine and treatments and tests you get or will that be determined by the government and some graphs and charts on what worked for someone else. Find that out!
And finally think about this..when insurance companies act crappy..and they certainly do there are a number of government and legal resources we have that we can go to to try to remedy a problem...when the overnment is telling you cannot get a particuliar medicine or treatment..who are you going to go to..TEL ME THAT! You think this US Press is going to watch out for you...think again...they are owned by large corporations that are positioning themselves to benefit form this Healthcare takeover (big example.. GE that owns NBC and MSNBC) and all they do is report whatever is going to make them money. So whatever you do please get your information from somewhere else...and FYI AARP is also one of the compainies positioning themselves to make big bucks so also don not bieleve their propaganda!
